Using Google Maps in a semi-truck is a recipe for disaster. Consumer GPS apps don't account for bridge heights, weight restrictions, truck-prohibited roads, or the turning radius of a 53-foot trailer. Professional drivers need purpose-built tools, and the good news is there are several excellent options available today.
Garmin dezl Series
The Garmin dezl remains the gold standard for dedicated truck GPS units. It lets you input your vehicle's height, weight, length, and cargo type, then routes you accordingly. Features like upcoming weigh station alerts, hours-of-service tracking integration, and truck-specific points of interest (truck stops, rest areas, CAT scales) make it invaluable. The dezl OTR series offers large, easy-to-read displays that hold up well to vibration and sunlight glare.
Trucker Path App
Trucker Path is a free app with a massive community of drivers sharing real-time information. It's particularly strong for finding truck stops, parking availability, fuel prices, and weigh station statuses. While its routing isn't as robust as a dedicated GPS unit, many drivers use it as a companion tool alongside their primary navigation device.
CoPilot Truck GPS
CoPilot Truck is a smartphone-based GPS designed specifically for commercial vehicles. It offers offline maps — a critical feature when you're in areas with spotty cell service — and customizable vehicle profiles. The route planning feature lets you build multi-stop routes with fuel and rest breaks calculated automatically.
ELD Integration Matters
Whatever navigation tool you choose, make sure it integrates well with your Electronic Logging Device. Seamless integration between your GPS, ELD, and fleet management system reduces distraction and keeps you compliant with HOS regulations.
