If you're searching for professional trucking certification in Tacoma, you've got options. Community colleges, national chain schools, and independent programs all operate in the Puget Sound area. But there's a reason National Standard Trucking School has a 4.9-star Google rating with over 100 reviews — we do things differently. We're a locally founded and family-operated school, established in 2019 at 7402 Pacific Hwy E in Tacoma, and every decision we make centers on one thing: getting our students hired into good-paying commercial driving careers.

Which CDL Training Program Is Right for Me?
We offer four CDL programs. Class A Manual is $4,500 and Class A Automatic is $4,000, both 160 hours over four weeks. Class B runs $3,000 for 80 hours over three weeks. And our Class B to Class A upgrade is $3,975 for 80 hours. We run daytime classes Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and we offer evening classes for students who can't leave their current job during the day. Every program covers classroom instruction, range practice, and on-road driving — no shortcuts.
Why Does the Student-to-Instructor Ratio Matter?
At NSTS, we maintain a 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio — that's three students per instructor on the road, not the 6:1 or 8:1 ratio common at larger programs. When you're on the range or on the road, you're not waiting around while 10 other students take their turns. You're driving. You're training on Freightliner Cascadia and Kenworth T680 trucks — the same models you'll encounter working for major carriers. Our instructors know each student's weak points and adjust the curriculum on the fly, providing the kind of hands-on skill development that builds genuine confidence behind the wheel.
How Does NSTS Help Graduates Find Jobs?
We work directly with Swift, UPS, FedEx, Werner, J.B. Hunt, Schneider, XPO, Estes, Penske, and Covenant. These aren't just logos on our wall — recruiters from these companies visit our school regularly and many of our students have offers before graduation. Our 95% job placement rate isn't a marketing number. It's the result of real relationships we've built with carriers who trust the quality of drivers we produce. The Tacoma and Seattle freight market is strong thanks to the Port of Tacoma, Amazon distribution centers, and heavy I-5 corridor traffic.
Can I Get CDL Training for Free or at Reduced Cost?
We specialize in helping students secure funding that covers part or all of their tuition. Multiple paths exist depending on your situation:
- WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) grants through WorkSource Tacoma — a federal workforce grant that can cover 100% of training costs for eligible candidates
- Amazon Career Choice program — Amazon warehouse and fulfillment center employees in the Puget Sound area can use this employer benefit toward CDL training
- Boeing employee education assistance — Boeing workers may qualify for tuition reimbursement
- Climb Credit and Paramount Capital — student loan options with manageable repayment terms
- Carrier-sponsored training — some partner carriers like Swift offer tuition coverage in exchange for a driving commitment after graduation
Many of our students pay zero dollars out of pocket for their entire commercial driver education. We facilitate funding applications before enrollment so you know exactly what you qualify for — no surprises. Call us at (253) 210-0505 to discuss your options.
Serving the Entire Puget Sound Region
