FAQ: Everything Female CDL Students Want to Know Before Starting Training

Will I Be the Only Woman in Class?

Possibly, but probably not. At National Standard Trucking School, we regularly train female students, and the percentage has been growing each year. Regardless of class composition, our instructors treat every student equally and our 3:1 student-to-instructor ratio ensures you get the individual attention you need. The training environment is professional, respectful, and focused on building your skills.

Is the Physical Aspect of Trucking Manageable?

Trucking involves some physical work — cranking landing gear, connecting air lines, and performing pre-trip inspections — but it's entirely manageable with proper technique. Strength matters less than knowing the right body mechanics. Our instructors teach efficient methods for every physical task so that you're never relying on brute force alone. Many successful female drivers will tell you that technique beats muscle every time.

Is It Safe for Women on the Road?

Safety is a legitimate concern, and being prepared makes all the difference. Practical steps include parking in well-lit areas near other trucks, keeping your doors locked, using truck stop locator apps that include safety ratings, and trusting your instincts. Many female drivers also keep personal safety devices in their cabs. The trucking community is overwhelmingly supportive, but smart habits are essential.

What About Bathroom Facilities on the Road?

This is one of the most-asked questions, and it deserves a straight answer. Major truck stops like Pilot, Flying J, Love's, and TA/Petro have clean restrooms and private showers — many with dedicated women's facilities. Planning your route around reputable truck stops is something experienced drivers do as a matter of course. During training at NSTS, our Tacoma campus has clean, accessible facilities for all students.

Will Companies Actually Hire Me?

Absolutely. The industry is actively recruiting women, and many carriers offer bonuses and mentorship programs specifically for female drivers. Our carrier partners — including Swift, FedEx, Werner, Schneider, and Covenant — all hire female graduates from National Standard Trucking School. With our 95% job placement rate, you'll have real opportunities waiting when you finish training.
